Unusual Gift for Someone

Sometimes it's really, really hard finding an unusual gift for someone. You might discover that your mom or dad's birthday is coming around and you can't seem to think of anything they might really enjoy on their birthday. Or it could be Father's Day or Mother's Day, and you can't just keep buying your dad ties he'll never wear or buy your mom the same old, boring flowers every year.

Even kids can be hard to buy for. My nephew is eight and it seems like he's one of those "Been there, done that" types of kids. He gets bored really fast with his toys and he needs to feel challenged and inspired by his toys and reading material.

We found that he really liked it when we bought him a star in the sky. Again, you're not really "buying" a star, but you are registering it through an international star registry. He received a beautiful and and personalized gift package complete with astronomy chart so he could locate his own star in the sky, lots of pretty drawings and a certificate.

Since my nephew was already interested in astronomy, this gift was perfect for him. He has since been inspired to read just about everything about the stars and watches lots of DVD's about astronomy and science.

I think that encouraging a child to learn about this huge, wonderful universe we live in is a really great thing to do. And if you buy a star for your child (or your niece or nephew) you are enhancing that child's natural curiosity about life. Pretty soon, he'll want to learn more about the space program, NASA, the size and placement of the stars and planets, the orbits of the moon and the Earth, and more. Next time there's a lunar eclipse or solar eclipse, he'll be more interested in taking notice of these amazing natural phenomena.

Anyway, my family was glad to find an unusual gift for someone in the form of buying or registering a star for my nephew. It's provided a great reference point for him as he continues to develop his own passion for the stars and planets.
